Cheesy Gordita crunch tacos using Trader Joe’s ingredients! These homemade tacos inspired by Taco Bell are so easy, crunchy and packed with flavor.
When I was younger I was absolutely obsessed with Taco Bell. The crunch wrap supreme and cheesy Gordita crunch were always my go-to. I loved that they had crunch and cheesiness. However, I don’t eat too much fast food anymore. It just doesn’t taste as good to me. Also, it’s so easy to make my fast food favorites at home. They’re much more fresh this way. And I know exactly what ingredients are going into my meals.
What you’ll need for this recipe:
I got all of the ingredients at Trader Joe’s. However, most of these ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
- Flour tortillas, I used Trader Joe’s whole wheat carb savvy tortillas but I also love Mission flour tortillas
- Hard taco shells
- Ground turkey, ground beef would also work
- Trader Joe’s spicy taco sauce
- Chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper
- Shredded Mexican cheese blend
- Shredded cabbage or shredded lettuce
- Roma tomatoes
- Trader Joe’s jalapeño sauce or your favorite hot sauce

6 flour tortillas
6 hard taco shells
1 tbsp olive oil
1 lb ground turkey
1/3 cup Trader Joe’s taco sauce, or more to taste
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup shredded Mexican cheese, plus more for topping
1 cup shredded cabbage or shredded lettuce
2 roma tomatoes, diced
Trader Joe’s jalapeño sauce to taste, or your favorite hot sauce
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and spray a large baking sheet with non-stick spray. Add the flour tortillas in a single layer and sprinkle them with a thin layer of shredded cheese.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground turkey and season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned, crumbling it as it cooks.
Meanwhile, bake the tortillas for 4-5 minutes or until the cheese if fully melted. Take a hard shell and place it in the middle of the soft shell. Fold up and hold the sides together (the cheese should act like glue, keeping the tortillas together) repeat with every hard shell.
When it’s almost browned add the chili powder, ground cumin, and garlic powder. Mix in the taco sauce and let simmer for 3-4 minutes. Tossing the turkey to fully coat.
Assemble the tacos by dividing the meat amongst the cheesy tortillas, then add some shredded cabbage or lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and shredded cheese.
Drizzle with jalapeño sauce and enjoy!
