Delicious and crispy Asian BBQ brussels sprouts made easily in the air fryer or oven! A veggie side dish that’s full of flavor.
I certainly have been making the most of brussels sprouts season. To be honest, I eat them all year long. However, they’re the best this time of year. I always look for the big ones! That’s just my preference.
I wanted to make another Asian inspired brussels sprout recipe. Something that would go great as a side dish! These are far from boring. But, they are so easy and have minimal ingredients! So all you need are the brussels sprouts, oil, ginger, BBQ sauce, coconut aminos, rice vinegar, and salt. You can also add chopped cilantro and gochugaru, but that’s totally optional! If you’re not familiar with gochugaru – it’s Korean-style red pepper.  You can find it in the spice aisle of most big grocery stores!
For BBQ sauce, you can use any brand you’d like. I would just recommend staying away from ones with additional flavor. For some healthier options I recommend: Primal Kitchen’s  organic and unsweetened BBQ sauce, The New Primal BBQ sauce, and Tessemae’s BBQ sauce.

You can air fry or bake the brussels sprouts. Both methods will get them super crispy. I find the crispier they are, the better! So just go with what you see. If you think they need to be crispier, cook them longer.

1 lb. brussels sprouts, halved and trimmed
1 tbsp olive or avocado oil
salt to taste
1/2 tbsp olive or avocado oil
1 tsp grated ginger
2 tbsp BBQ sauce
1 tbsp coconut aminos, soy sauce will also work
1/2 tbsp rice vinegar
salt to taste
pinch of Korean style red pepper, optional
chopped cilantro and/or sesame seeds for topping, optional
Combine Brussels sprouts with oil and salt, mix to combine.
If air frying – add to air fryer basket and cook at 380 degrees F for 6 minutes, toss and cook another 5-7 minutes.
If baking -arrange brussels sprouts on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake at 400 degrees F for 18-22 minutes, or until they are crispy and golden enough to your liking! Toss them half way.
While brussels sprouts are cooking – prepare your sauce.
In a small mixing bowl combine BBQ sauce, coconut aminos, rice vinegar, salt and Korean style red pepper (if using) and mix.
In a small sauce pan over medium heat add the oil.
Once heated add the grated ginger and let cook for about 1 minute, stirring frequently. Don’t let it burn!
Add sauce mixture to the sauce pan.
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce thicken for 4-5 minutes, whisking occasionally. It should reduce quite a bit.
When brussels sprouts are done cooking, add them to the sauce pan and mix together.
If air frying – add the smothered brussels sprouts back to the air fryer and cook at 400 degrees for 2-3 minutes to caramelize them with the sauce.
If baking – add back to baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees 2-3 more minutes.
Top with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds if desired.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
